Zion, from Thee Is Sounded Forth

lyricist: Benjamin Beddome (1717–1795). Joseph Mainzer, 1841

Zion

from thee is sounded forth

The word of an almighty God

To tell the riches of His grace

And spread His glories all abroad.

In terms expressive to unfold

The sinner’s doom

and sin’s desert

The cross of Jesus to reveal

And send conviction to the heart.

Unhappy they

estranged from God

Whom neither wrath nor grace can move

Who on the Gospel cast contempt

And still despise a Savior’s love.

But to the scepter they must yield

Or bow beneath resistless power;

Oh may they tremble at Thy word

And saints with grateful hearts adore.
