When Jesus Was Slain

Composer: Leslie Park, 1912

When Christ the Son of God was slain

Upon that awful day

The temple’s veil was rent in twain

The sunlight fled away.

The debt He paid for you and me

The cross He meekly bore;

But now from pain and sorrow free

He reigns forevermore.

With thorns upon His bleeding brow

He goes to Calvary

To death His humble soul did bow

To set the captives free.

The earth did quake

the saints arose

Who slept beneath the sod;

The Roman captain cried aloud

This was the Son of God.
