Thyself Instead

lyricist: Fanny Crosby, 1885
Composer: John Sweney

Lord

take my heart

my wandering heart

To Thee its powers belong;

Cast out each thought of unbelief

And fill me now with song.

Since Thou to purchase life for me

Thy precious blood hast shed

Take all I have forever dear

But give Thyself instead.

Take from my soul its dross

refine

Its every sin remove;

Cast out the idols I have made

And fill me with Thy love.

Take Thou my days and let my hours

Be spent alone for Thee;

O give me strength my cross to bear

Whate’er that cross may be.

And when before Thy throne I stand

My toil and labor o’er

I’ll strike the harp Thy hand has tuned

And praise Thee evermore.
