Through the Shadows

lyricist: Lillian Rainor, 1899
Composer: Lynn Ryland

To each pilgrim here benighted

Jesus has His mercy plighted;

He hath graciously invited

Every trembling soul to Him;

If He only walk beside us

Then no evil can betide us;

He will comfort

He will guide us

Thro’ the shadows dark and grim.

Tho’ the raging storms assail us

Tho’ our strength and courage fail us

Tho’ the gloomy shadows veil us

From His face along the way;

If we trust Him and revere Him

If we truly love and fear Him

If in trial we are near Him

He will turn our night to day.

Brightest skies sometimes are clouded

Brightest hopes are oft enshrouded

Life with doubts and fears is crowded

Bravest hearts are made to ache;

But for us ’twere worse than madness

To give way to doubts and sadness;

Visions of eternal gladness

Thro’ the shadows soon shall break.
