On Life’s Dark, Unfathomed Ocean

lyricist: Caroline Jenks, 1859
Composer: William Kirkpatrick

On life’s dark

unfathomed ocean

To a far and distant shore

Join us in our hearts’ devotion

Loud above the tempest’s roar.

Naught to fear from storm or sorrow

Jesus is our guard and guide;

In our heavenly home tomorrow

We shall rest us by His side.

Storms may lower and winds affright us

Darkly from the angry sky

Midnight gloom and doubt benight us

Jesus still is ever nigh.

He can hush the tempest’s roar

To the winds say

Peace

be still;

All dark evils own His power

And are harmless ’neath His will.

Distant

see our home is shining

With its golden domes and spires

No more cares or sad repining

In the port of our desires.

On the shore our friends will meet us

Loved and lost ones gone before

With their echoing welcomes greet us

And we’ll rest forevermore.
