On Eastern Plain Reclining

lyricist: Irvin Mack, 1900
Composer: Lincoln Hall

On eastern plain reclining

In dark and stilly night

The shepherds see the shining

Of glorious

heav’nly light.

To shepherds poor and lowly

Amazed at such a sight;

They sang of Christ the holy

His mission and His might.

Rejoice! ye sages hoary

Repeat the wondrous story

The Lord of life and glory

Is born our king today.

Thro’ long unnumbered eons

Vast multitudes unborn

Will sing in joyful paeans

Of Christ on Christmas morn.

As angels sang in glory

Of Christ

our Savior’s birth

So men shall chant the story

Of peace

good will on earth.
