Light Among the Shadows

lyricist: Elisha Hoffman, 1905
Composer: Thomas Mosley

There is light among the shadows

There is gold among the dross

There’s a joy for every sorrow

There’s a crown for every cross;

In this world of sin and sorrow

Where the heart is bowed with care

We may view by faith the morrow

Where the soul is free from fear.

There is hope with our despairing

There is peace ’mid our distress

For with others we are sharing

Joy as well as bitterness;

Clouds have all a silver lining

Light is shining overhead

And we know mid our repining

That our hopes have not all fled.

God is living and regarding

All the cries of our distress

God is reigning and rewarding

All His own in righteousness;

Evermore this Friend will love us

Evermore His grace bestow

And from yonder Heav’n above us

Peace and blessing we shall know.

Bear your crosses

unrepining

Take the bitter with the sweet

And your hearts to Him inclining

Bow in patience at His feet;

Tell Him there

in sweet submission

You will welcome good or ill;

All that comes by His permission

Worketh out His sovereign will.
