Jesus Will Answer for Me

lyricist: William Martin, 1917
Composer: Rufus Cornelius

When called to the judgment at last

And life shall be finished and past

O what would my dread portion be

Were no one there pleading for me?

But I have an Advocate pleading for me

Who bore all my sins

and who died on the tree

And when I stand there

I will make but this plea:

That Jesus will answer for me.

I know I am worthy to die

My sins I can never deny

And at the great judgment I see

One hope for a sinner like me.

The angels must cast me away

In trembling and hopeless dismay;

But Jesus who died in my place

Will win for me pardoning grace.
