I Wish That I Had Never Sinned

lyricist: F. L. Cornish, 1893
Composer: John Sweney, 1892

I wish that I had never sinned

But since that cannot be

I’ll lay my guilty burden on

The Lamb of Calvary.

I feel the shame

I know the guilt

My soul cries out in pain;

Dear Jesus

purify me now

And make me whole again.

The saddest hour my life has known

Is that wherein I strayed

Away from God’s divine command

And penitence delayed.

But penitent today I come

Almighty God

to Thee;

For Jesus’ sake

incline Thine ear

Accept my humble plea.

Speak to my soul in Thine own way

Relieve its weight of care

Teach me to go on and sin no more

That I Thy peace may share.
