I Wish That I Had Never Sinned

I wish that I had nev­er sinned

But since that can­not be

I’ll lay my guil­ty bur­den on

The Lamb of Cal­va­ry.

I feel the shame

I know the guilt

My soul cries out in pain;

Dear Je­sus

pu­ri­fy me now

And make me whole again.

The sad­dest hour my life has known

Is that where­in I strayed

Away from God’s di­vine com­mand

And pe­ni­tence de­layed.

But pe­ni­tent to­day I come

Almighty God

to Thee;

For Je­sus’ sake

in­cline Thine ear

Accept my hum­ble plea.

Speak to my soul in Thine own way

Relieve its weight of care

Teach me to go on and sin no more

That I Thy peace may share.
