I Sleep, but Love Still Waketh

lyricist: Wilbur Tillett, 1925
Composer: John Dykes, 1875

I sleep

but love still waketh

To turn the night to day;

No leave the heart e’er taketh:

Love cannot pass away.

However deep the sleeping

To loved ones may appear

There is no need for weeping

My heart

my love is here.

I sleep

but love still waketh

And lo

the tender care

Of Him who never sleepeth

Is ’round us everywhere.

In waking or in sleeping

No ill can e’er befall

Beneath His care and keeping

Who watches over all.

I sleep

but be not grieving

When for a time we part;

For though I go

I’m leaving

Behind my loving heart.

’Tis not a final rending

Of sacred bonds in twain;

For love there is no ending;

Some day we’ll meet again.
