Christmas Bells (Blenkhorn)

lyricist: Ada Blenkhorn, 1895
Composer: Emma Ashford

Many stories quaint and olden

Oft are told to me;

Some are touched with grief and sadness

Others full of glee;

But there’s one that’s sweeter

dearer

Than all other lays

’Tis the story told by angels

In the olden days.

Sweet and joyous is the ringing

Of the bells

Christmas bells;

Full of beauty is the story

Each one gladly tells

Christmas bells

sweet bells.

Songs of almost heav’nly sweetness

Fall upon my ear

Happy songs of home and kindred

Filling me with cheer;

One surpassing all the others

In my soul doth ring

’Tis the song of peace and glory

Christmas angels sing.

Many are the gifts I cherish

Friendship’s token true

Giving me exquisite pleasure

As they meet my view;

But there’s one of priceless value

Blessings to impart

’Tis the Christ Child’s Christmas greeting

Treasured in my heart.
