Awake, Arise, Behold the Day

lyricist: Anonymous, ca. 1860
Composer: James Elliott, 1874

Awake

arise

behold the day

The birthday of the Son of God!

Come

sinners

now no more delay

But seek redemption in His blood.

Oh! what a condescending grace!

He left His Father’s throne above;

Came down to save the human race

With bowels filled with endless love.

The heavenly angels

with the news

Came to the shepherds for to tell:

This day is born among the Jews

God’s Son

the Prince Immanuel.

Oh! how the shepherds did rejoice

At the glad tidings of our king:

And straight they heard a joyful noise

The choirs of heavenly angels sing.

All glory be to God on high

Who pitied sinful men forlorn;

Peace be on earth

good will to men

The Savior of the world is born.
